Michigan’s graduated driver licensing process requires that teens 17 and younger take Segment 1, Segment 2 and a Driving Test. SEGMENT 1 for teens, ages 17 and younger

 

Requirement:

Students must be 14 years and 8 months to 17 years old. If you are 18 years or older, please click the “Adults” section at the top of the page.

 

Cost:

The cost is $430. We accept cash, or checks made payable to Elite Driving School. Students will pay in full on the first day of class.

 

Class instruction

-- Day 1: The first day of class will be in person at our school. Students will verify their registration information, pay for the class, meet their driving instructor, schedule driving times, and begin class instruction.

-- Days 2-11: Class instruction will be held online in a Zoom meeting and supplemental materials will be in our Google Classroom. (Students can only access Google Classroom with a Google, Gmail, or a YouTube account and it cannot be a school Gmail account. Please have your student create a Gmail account if necessary.)

-- Day 12: The review/written test will take place at our school on the last day, not online.

 

Driving instruction:

Driving instructors will contact students to schedule driving times. On the road driving instruction/driving times will begin at our school. These times will be held before class and on days with no class. On the first day of class, students need to know their availability during the three weeks of class as instructors may begin assigning driving times that day.

 

** Important **

After successfully completing Segment 1, students will receive a Segment 1 Certificate. This certificate needs to be taken to the Secretary of State to obtain a Level 1 License as soon as possible. The process will be explained to students in class, but students and parents should read the Segment 1 Certificate for more information. Please keep this certificate in a safe place. Replacement certificates are $20 cash only.

SEGMENT 2 for teens, ages 17 and younger
 
About:
Segment 2 is classroom instruction only; there are no driving lessons. The following topics are covered: risk awareness, alcohol and driving, drug-impaired driving and illness, distracted driving, drowsy driving, sleep and emotions, anatomical gift donation, and driving test explanation.
 
Requirements:
Student must have their Level 1 License from the Secretary of State for at least 3 MONTHS and completed at least 30 hours of driving.
 
Cost:
The cost is $80 cash only. Students will pay in full on the first day of class.
 
Class instruction:
Segment 2 classes will be in person for all three days. Because it's a short class, the Secretary of State requires attendance each day. 
 
Important:
After successfully completing Segment 2, students will receive a Segment 2 Certificate. This certificate is needed for the Driving Test, and eventually to get the student's Level 2 License. Please place this certificate in a safe place. Replacement certificates are $20 cash only.

Driving Tests & Practice Lessons

Driving Test for teens, ages 17 and younger

  • Requirements: Must have Level 1 License for at least 6 months, completed 50 hours of road practice, and completed Segment 2.
  • The Driving Test includes a vehicle component familiarization and safety inspection (not scored), and two scored test segments. The first scored segment focuses on basic control skills and consists of three off-road exercises (parking exercises). The second scored segment focuses on your ability to drive safely and consists of on-the-road driving and expressway driving.
  • To prepare for the test, please read the Driving Skills Test Study Guide.
  • The cost is $75. Optional car rental is an additional $25  — customer does not need to provide car insurance. 
  • The test begins at our school — 23804 Harper Ave, St. Clair Shores (between 9 and 10 Mile roads, across from Tim Hortons)
  • A parent or guardian must be present and in the car for the test. No other people are allowed to be in the car besides the teen, parent/guardian and examiner.
  • On the day of the test, customers with a vehicle need the following:
    • Enough fuel to drive for 45 minutes.
    • Level 1 License, Segment 2 Certificate, registration and proof of insurance — please verify the documents are not expired and bring them into the office at the time of your test.
    • Payment of $75. 
  • On the day of the test, customers renting a vehicle need the following:
    • Level 1 License and Segment 2 Certificate — please verify the documents are not expired and bring them into the office at the time of your test.
    • Payment of $75, plus an additional $25 to rent the vehicle. 
  • Please call (586) 778-4934 to make an appointment. We cannot schedule driving tests through email. Please have the applicant's driver's license number and issue date available to you when making the appointment (both are listed to the right of the photo).

OPTIONAL: Practice Lessons for teens, ages 17 and younger

  • Requirement: Must have Level 1 License or a valid Driver's License.
  • Lessons are offered September through May only.
  • An Elite vehicle will be used.
  • Lessons are 45 minutes long.
  • The cost for each lesson is $65.
  • On the day of the lesson, customers need the following:
    • Level 1 License or Driver’s License — please verify it is not expired and bring it into the office at the time of your lesson.
    • Payment of $65.
